New every morning!

"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 'The LORD is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.'"

(Lamentations 3:22-24)

One of the (many) things that surprised me when I was a parent of young children was the ability that my kids had to "reset" each morning. No matter what may have happened the night before (like they were put on time out, or didn't get dessert, or had to go to bed early, etc.), they'd wake up refreshed and in good spirits, as if nothing negative had happened prior. We were "all good." (On the other hadn't, I would have lost sleep thinking my kids were going to hate me forever!)

Chapter 3 in the book of Lamentations is the inspiration of one of the greatest Christian hymns ever written, "Great is Thy Faithfulness." It testifies to the fact that God's love and mercies never come to an end. "They are new every morning," says the writer (and the scripture passage!). First of all, the mere fact that God's love and mercy never runs out is amazing! But the indication that they are NEW EVERY MORNING was especially touching. It's as if God "resets" every day and holds no grudges against us... even on our worst days! (We still have to face the consequences of our actions and decisions with others - but God will not remove his love and mercy!)

GREAT IS GOD'S FAITHFULNESS!
