"Early to Rise"
"Do not love sleep, or else you will come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread."
(Proverbs 20:13)
In Chris Rice's song, "LIFE MEANS SO MUCH," he writes:
Every day is a bank account
And time is our currency
So no one's right, nobody's poor
We get 24 hours each
So how are you gonna spend
Will you invest or squander
Try to get ahead or help someone who's under
(CHORUS)
Teach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
Somehow our souls forgot
Life means so much
Life means so much
Life means so much
It's a fine line, isn't it? Our bodies need sleep, rest, rejuvenation. And yet, our hearts often want as much sleep as our bodies can get. But we only have 24 hours each day. Personally, I'm much more productive in the morning hours. So in the past few years or so, I've been getting up earlier each day... in order to get a few more things accomplished (like reading or exercise!).
The writer of Proverbs is encouraging people not to be "in love" with sleep (or at least not in sleeping in!). Get up! Get your day started. Be productive. Help yourself and others in need. It can lead to wonderful things.
(Of course, if you're a young person, your body only grows while you're sleeping... so get ALL you can!!!)
