"...For the rest of mine."

"For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you."

(Isaiah 54:10)

Back in 1996, John Travolta starred in the movie "PHENOMENON." It's the story

of George Malley who suddenly becomes a genius (with telekinetic powers even) after seeing a flash of light in the night sky. He later discovers he also has a massive brain tumor and is quickly dying.

Choosing to spend his remaining time with his girlfriend, Lace, George draws closer and closer to her, and discovers what's truly important in life. I still remember the iconic line, near his death, when George asks Lace, "Will you love me for the rest of my life?" She replies, "No... I'll love you for the rest of mine."

It may be a Hollywood line, but it's so endearing. AND... IT'S BIBLICAL! The prophet Isaiah, speaking to God's people while they were in exile... and who are feeling betrayed and abandoned by God... give them a Divine word of promise and hope: "For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you." God is the one who was, who is, and who forevermore shall be. That's God's way of saying, "No... I'll love you for the rest of mine!"

Many of us have lost loved ones... parents, siblings, spouses, children, even close friends. The love we have for those people will stay with us forever. How comforting to know that God's love for US will be even more eternal than that. Why not take the time to draw closer to the One who created us, redeemed us, and sustains us?!?
