"We're not in Westeros anymore!"

"Thus says the LORD GOD: 'Enough, O princes of Israel! Put away violence and oppression, and do what is just and right. Cease your evictions of my people,' says the LORD GOD."

(Ezekiel 45:9)

I was a bit late to the party, but I've become a big Game of Thrones fan. (Yes, it's extremely violent at times, but it's an incredible story nonetheless!) The land of Westeros is a CRAZY place, with different groups of people (both residents and foreigners) seeking ultimate control. Only one can sit on the iron throne (with the swords of its vanquished monarchs creating the actual throne itself!)... though many are trying. To "play the game," nothing is off limits. And just like in historical contexts, we human beings have often stopped at nothing in our quest for (ultimate) power. (sigh)

As I was reading Ezekiel today, I couldn't help but think of Game of Thrones. God is calling Israel's kings ("princes") to account for the ways they've manipulated and maligned others to get what they want... including oppression, violence, and evictions... often at the expense of the poor and most vulnerable. "Quit evicting my people!" says God. "Let them live in peace. Don't try to run them out of the country, just to pad your own wealth (or ego!)."

I love how no king (or other leader) is beyond God's reach. We were created to love one another and been in relationship with each other. God calls us to care for ALL of his people by extending hospitality and grace. "Do what is just and right," says the LORD.

In Israel... or Westeros... or even the United States.
