The Physics of Jesus
"That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, 'He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.'"
(Matthew 8:16-17)
I'm not much of a science guy. But I do remember "conservation of energy" in physics. Energy can neither be created or destroyed - instead, it transforms from one form to another. It goes hand-in-hand with the concept that for every ACTION there is an equal and opposite REACTION. Basic stuff, I know... but as I was reading Matthew this morning, I was reminded of it.
The author tells us how Jesus would heal people who were "demon possessed" and cured all who were sick. That's nothing new. Jesus has quite the reputation for being a healer. But then Matthew (who loves connecting the Jesus story to the Old Testament - the Hebrew Scriptures) mentions Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases."
I guess I'd never considered the Laws of Physics when thinking about Jesus' healing before. It was more like putting rubbish in the garbage can - Jesus "took" the sickness, illness, and disease and "removed" it. Where did it go? Never thought about it, honestly. It just disappeared.
But this quote from Isaiah reminded me of physics - the sickness and disease (and demons) has to go somewhere. Jesus took them in. Wow. As if his own body somehow processed the infirmity... and converted it into something else (steam, maybe?!? lol).
I wonder if it drained him to do healing? If it took a while for his body to "regulate" and return to normal? Or if his divinity was like an unending source of power (think, the sun!)?
Things that make you go, "Hmmmm...."
In the end, I'm just so grateful. So grateful.
