The Antidote
"But law came in, with the result that the trespass multiplied; but where sin increased, grace abounded all there, so that, just as sin exercised dominion in death, so grace might also exercise dominion through justification leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
(Romans 5:20-21)
"Nobody's perfect." That's more than just a slogan, bumper sticker, t-shirt, or motivational poster. That's a fact. And in this crazy world in which we live (especially this past month or so with all the death & destruction in the news), it's easy to see "sin abound." Acts of evil, terror, violence, and oppression are everywhere. It's easy to feel overwhelmed. It's easy to get discouraged & despondent. But it doesn't have to be that way.
The apostle Paul was aware of this human condition two centuries ago (sin has a long shelf life!). People have been "not perfect" since the beginning of time. But one thing can overcome our faults, failings, and the evil of this world: GRACE! God's grace! God's love, patience, forgiveness and unmerited favor in our lives. And God dolls out grace quite recklessly! God's grace covers a multitude of sins... and can ultimately lead to salvation.
So let us not be discouraged. We need to be vigilant, of course, in standing up to evil & oppression wherever we find it. But may it not overwhelm us, because God's grace is sufficient. It's the antidote to sin... if only we'll let it!
