Anti-Arrogance

"Beloved, pray for us."

(1 Thessalonians 5:25)

Prayer is central to Christianity. We're called to pray regularly ("without ceasing," even!). We pray in the mornings and evenings, before meals, and whenever people are sick or in trouble. I write down the names of people I'm to be praying for (so I can remember!). I even put reminders in my phone to pray for my wife and kids every day. It's that important!

Yesterday I was direct messaging a friend and colleague who is changing appointments this year. After telling me the (exciting) news, she added, "Pray for me." I knew she meant it. She had a big task ahead, and though she was excited, she also knew it would be quite a challenge. I thought it was a very appropriate request.

And then today I was reading 1 Thess. 5, and came across Paul's words: "Beloved, pray for us." And it hit me. I rarely ask for prayers for myself. Why?!? Do I not think I need them? Like I'm good enough to get by on my own skills? Is it like my clothing - I rarely buy any new shirts, shorts, pants, etc. for myself... but tend to go with what I already have? So then I never really think about asking for prayer?

If Paul, one of the greatest figures in the New Testament (outside of Jesus, of course) was in need of prayer requests, then we ALL are in need of prayer requests.

MY PRAYER: Lord Jesus, forgive my arrogance. Forgive my self-reliance. Thank you for the gifts & abilities you have blessed me with... but help me to open myself for asking others for prayer... and relying on your grace and strength to be the person you've called me to be. AMEN.
