Pomp.

"Mortals cannot abide in their pomp; they are like the animals that perish."

(Psalm 49:20)

I watched a documentary yesterday: I AM by Tom Shadyac. He's the director of numerous hit comedies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty, Liar Liar, etc. He quickly achieved great recognition and wealth... and enjoyed the wealth he had amassed: big mansions, fancy furnishings, cars, jets, etc. But he soon realized it didn't bring any additional happiness. Then when a bike accident left him with extended post-concussion syndrome, he began re-evaluating his life (and life in general).

We humans like our "pomp." We like fineries, extras, niceties, etc. We like titles, ranks, promotions, etc. We like recognition & prestige. We like our stuff, too. The psalmist reminds us that we are all mortal. We all will die someday. And we can't take any of that with us. So what's our call now? Be humble. Know that only God saves. Invest in people, relationships, make lasting memories and experiences while we can. That's where it's at.

And love.

All the time.
