SPECK-TACULAR!
"Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?"
(Luke 6:41)
I just watched a TED Talk on lying. Actually, it was on spotting lying. However, the speaker began by saying, "The person on your left is a liar. So is the person on your right. We're all liars!" Of course she then clarified the difference between 'white lies' and full-blown deception. But the point still remains: we're all liars.
Nevertheless, we humans love pointing out the faults, failures, and foibles of others. Jesus knew that, too. So when he gathered folks together for his first big teaching ("The Sermon on the Plain" according to Luke), he reminded everyone to attend to the 'logs' in their own eyes, not the 'specks' in others'. And just a few verses prior, Jesus commanded folks not to judge others, either. (sigh) Why don't we get this?!?
I'm guessing it has something to do with our insecurity. We attack, belittle, judge, and condemn others because we're somewhat insecure. I don't want to be that kind of person.
Help me, O God, to focus on my own issues, and to love others through theirs. AMEN.
